Australian Chenin Blanc Challenge 2023

Who makes the best Chenin Blanc in Australia?

The Australian Chenin Blanc Challenge judging for 2023 was held at Mandoon Estate on 7 September and the winners were announced at a public tasting event at Windy Creek Estate on 8 October.

The aim of the Chenin Blanc Challenge is to bring together the best Australian Chenin Blanc and to celebrate, improve and encourage the quality and diversity of Chenin Blanc wines. The Chenin Blanc Challenge stamps Australia as a renowned Chenin Blanc producing country alongside the Loire Valley of France and South Africa.

Our judging panel included Erin Larkin (Chair), Emma Gillespie, Lance Parkin and Toni Paterson MW.

Grape vines have been grown in the Swan Valley since 1829, making it Australia’s second oldest wine region. Chenin Blanc has long been the most widely planted white grape variety in the region and annually the Swan Valley crushes around a third of Australia’s Chenin Blanc.

The Australian Chenin Blanc Challenge will be an annual event open to all Australian winemakers and producers.
